Customer Reviews

The Bose Companion 5 speaker system is a fantastic addition to a multimedia home computer system. I've had several different sets of computer speakers, including one other Bose set, and this is hands-down the best set.

The Companion 5 set consists of two desktop speakers and an acoustimass-type sub-woofer unit or module. The module is the heart of the system -- not only does it control the speakers and bass, but it also functions as an excellent soundcard. The module connects via USB and not through the computer sound card because of that, and will function as the primary soundcard for your computer. Per the directions, they need to connect through a USB port directly on the computer, and not through a hub or docking station. The instructions do not specify why, but I presume it would be due to the delay present in most hubs. Additionally, one needs to make sure that your computers sound and audio settings for the OS and software are configured properly to make sure the speakers work properly. It should occur automatically when the speakers are set-up. The directions are all very clear on how to ensure this happens in a step-by-step process, and include a good troubleshooting guide in case problems occur. It took less than a single minute for me to set up when I did it as almost everything was handled automatically by the speakers. It is important to note that you must follow the provided directions if you want these speakers to work properly. Most of the negative reviews posted seem to point out what happens when you don't follow directions. However, once you follow them, you'll get unbelievable sound from the system. I had to get up once and check the door behind me because I thought I heard someone knocking, only to discover that it was sound coming from my game that I had heard.

PROS:
- Superb, full spectrum sound from a small, compact system
- Very rich sound when used with DVD movies, CD's, MP3's, and games
- Accurately conveys 5.1 sound when media/software uses that format
- Subwoofer provides excellent very low frequency sounds
- Uses very little desk space
- Very attractive appearance
- Excellent high-end sound card for all but the most specialized applications

CONS:
- Price (though I don't have "buyer's remorse" now that I have the system, and considering a soundcard is included makes the price more reasonable)
- Weakest area of the virtual 5.1 coverage is directly behind head
- No microphone input (important for those using online games in particular)
- No on-off switch; unit can go into a "mute" or "standby" mode, but seems like a waste of electricity
- Will disable/by-pass an expensive sound card if one is on your system

OVERALL: Highly recommended if you can afford it
Alternatives: If one of the problems above is a showstopper for this system, my recommendation would be to look at the Klipsch systems.

Customer Reviews
This review is from: Bose Companion 2 Series II multimedia speaker system (Electronics)
I have Altec Lansing ATP3 back at my home. They're a pretty good 2.1 set, and never had problems with them. But now, I'm away from home.

I set out to buy speakers to help me relax in my hotel room. My first choice would have been a 2.1 system. But since I am put up in a hotel room, a 2.1 system would prove heavy on my floor-space. So, instead I started to look out for good 2.0 systems.

There are several tiny speakers in the market, but all of them compromise sound quality over portability. I am ready to drag along some weight if needed, but I didn't want tin cans.

After a lot of research, I ended up with two options - Bose Companion 2 Series II and Klipsch Promedia 2.0. The Klipsch ones had excellent reviews all over the place. The bose speakers were rather new and haven't yet received a professional review anywhere. My deciding factor was the size. I wanted the smallest of the speakers without a compromise on sound quality. The klipsch speakers were larger than the Bose. So, I had to choose Bose. I didn't get to listen to Klipsch Promedia 2.0 anywhere, so I can't do a comparison. On the other hand, I did get to hear Klipsch Promedia 2.1 before and they're exceptionally good. I would prefer them to any Bose system if I was OK with a 2.1 system.

I had heard Bose Companion 2 (the older ones) at a Bose store, and didn't like them much, as they sounded tinny. A lot of screeching sound, and a lack of bass. But I found Series II to be much better. Thanks to Bose for overcoming this problem even if that needed an increase in the size of the speakers ever so slightly.

Now that I had only one option, I went ahead and brought these speakers home. Needless to say that these speakers were really good. I could hear the player's fingers rubbing against the guitar wires and all.

I listen to a lot of Rock, Jazz and Classical. The sound is really balanced, and reproduces bass, mid-tone and treble on more or less equal footage. I believe the bass and treble are amplified a little more. Maybe that's a decision Bose have taken to "define" their desktop speakers.

The advantage Bose has to other speakers of the same class, is the digital circuitry they probably use to enhance the sound to bring in increased stereo separation and roominess to the sound. The sound coming out is definitely more pleasing to the ears, and feels room-filling. You wouldn't get this experience with speakers from other brands, however faithful they are in reproducing sound as exactly as recorded.

Customer Reviews

I received this speaker as a gift, and have used it for about a week. It is a nice little speaker that delivers decent sound. The advantages of this speaker include:

(1) Small size - it will occupy a minimum space on your valuable desktop.
(2) Relatively attractive, clean design - I don't like the space-age designs of some computer speakers. This speaker has a clean, streamlined look, which will go well with most systems.
(3) It also packs quite a punch for a small speaker.

Unfortunately, these merits quickly become insignificant when you consider the downsides. This speaker has several unfortunate characteristics:

(1) In order to pack relatively strong bass, Bose sacrificed the sound clarity in the middle and high range. As you increase the volume, the sound gets mushy and muddy. If you mostly raps and hip-hops, this may not become an issue, but if you listen to classic or vocals, it *will* negatively influence your listening experience. At or above half the volume, this speaker becomes quite *un-listenable*.
(2) Please don't get me wrong. This is still not a bad speaker at all. For normal computer use (but not listening to music), this will serve most people very well. But, if you want to have a set of speaker that could deliver high-quality sound, and you thought the well-known name (=Bose) would deliver that to you, you might be proven incorrect.
(3) Basically, this speaker--like most other Bose products--is gravely over-priced product. If this speaker is priced at or below $30-40, it may qualify as a great product. However, at $100 (quite hefty for a pair of computer speakers), this simply does not provide the value you should get for your hard-earned money. With $100, you can get much better speakers. For example, M-Audio's Professional monitor speakers can be bought at $60-120, and will deliver five times better sounds than this speaker (and M-Audio's speakers are made of Wood not plastics like this one). Swan also makes great speakers at this price range.

Again, Bose don't make terrible products as some of the reviewers here criticized. However, it is absolutely true that their products are very much over-priced. Because of the heavy advertising costs and the costs of operating retail stores, Bose has to charge a higher price for their products.

The bottom line is: If you like how this speaker looks, and like the brand name, and do not mind paying a premium (a lot of premium, it is), this may be the speaker for you. For most others who want to get the best product for their hard-earned money, you will be better off looking somewhere else.
